Au restaurant, j’ai demandé à ma voisine de table « if she was enjoying her dish? » she replied « Not really, it’s special! ».
The French often say that something or someone is « spéciale » to express a notion of bizarre, pas très normal… avec une connotation négative.
The English word « Special » = unique, different, remarquable, sortant de l’ordinaire… a une notion de positive. We would have a « special » dish or bottle of wine for a birthday, Christmas, family visit etc. Pour un plat « bizarre » we would say « strange ».
Knowing the words isn’t enough. Il faut savoir les utiliser… toujours faire appel à un pro !
